Future Boy Conan

July, 2008 AD — Mankind was facing a crisis that threatened extinction. Supermagnetic weapons, far more destructive than nuclear weapons, caused half of the world to be wiped out in an instant. The Earth was seized by great tectonic upheavals and its axis twisted. In the aftermath of the Great Disaster, the five continents were completely ripped apart and slowly sunk into the sea.

1 Survivors of a Lost Island 1977.04.04
Twenty years later, the last two known surviving people are living on Remnant Island. Conan and his grandfather have made a home in the crashed spaceship that brought him back to Earth all those years ago. Nature's bounty is plentiful, but a new threat looms over the island. The shark known as Whitenose has been consuming all the fish, prompting Conan to dive into the sea to confront it. Upon returning to land, he is in for the shock of his life—a young girl has washed ashore. She introduces herself as Lana from a settlement called High Harbor.

Grandfather is relieved that other humans have survived the apocalypse, and Conan is excited to have met another person for the first time. However, their celebration is cut short when a hydroplane from Industria lands in search of Lana. The interrogation of Grandfather turns violent, and when they spot Lana, the assailants attempt to escape with her on the hydroplane. In a moment of bravery, Conan leaps into action to rescue his new friend.
2 The Journey 1977.04.11
Although Conan inflicts significant damage on the airborne plane, he fails to stop it before being thrown off. Upon returning to the hut to check on his grandfather, he discovers him injured in bed. His grandfather tells Conan that humans aren't meant to live alone and that he needs to go out and make friends in this world. When their ship crashed back down to Earth, the survivors felt hopeless without the knowledge that others were still alive out there. As life begins to return to the land, even within the crater left by their crash, his dying wish is for Conan to leave the island and find a new world somewhere over the horizon.
3 The First Friend 1977.04.18
As Conan sails through both rough and calm seas, he eventually reaches an island. Within the ruins of a long-abandoned city, now overtaken by vegetation, he senses he is not alone. Suddenly, he spots someone spying on him, but is unable to catch him. Using the clever trick of pretending to be dead, Conan eventually gains the upper hand on the shadowy figure, a wild boy named Jimsy. The two begin competing to see who is the strongest, but their mutual hunger soon leads them to call a truce for a quick snack. After staying at Jimsy's "house," Conan is taken to the other side of the island, where a small community engages in trading and salvage. Following some mischief with mining equipment, Conan and Jimsy make a quick getaway before they are caught. As Jimsy shares his spoils, Conan discovers that the Barracuda ship docked in the port is also from the island of Industria.
4 The Barracuda 197.04.25
Conan and Jimsy sneak aboard the Barracuda, still anchored off the shore of the island. Eavesdropping confirms that Lana was taken to Industria. Meanwhile, Jimsy follows his nose to the kitchen, where he devours all of the ship's food. After yelling at Captain Dyce over the intercom and blowing their cover, the pair almost escape but are chased down on the beach by mechanized walkers. After being interrogated, Conan convinces Dyce that they want to become sailors, but they cannot escape punishment for sneaking aboard. Sentenced to 20 spankings, Jimsy collapses after the first hit, still in a euphoric state from devouring the ship's provisions. Conan steps in to take his punishment on top of his own. Afterwards, they are put to work in the cargo hold, but Jimsy isn't eager to work or even be aboard the ship. However, when he learns that Conan took his punishment in his place, he begins to help out with newfound enthusiasm.
5 Industria 1977.05.09
As the Barracuda reaches Industria, Conan spots the Falco, the seaplane that kidnapped Lana. Monsley, the woman responsible for Lana's abduction, suddenly appears to argue with Captain Dyce. Recognizing her, Conan attacks, throwing off the other workers before Captain Dyce steps in to stop him. Later, Captain Dyce attends a hearing regarding his mission to locate Dr. Briac Lao and acquire his secrets on harnessing solar energy. Because Industria has only a few years remaining before its nuclear reactor is depleted, the officials are displeased that he has only returned with Briac's granddaughter. Monsley visits Lana's cell to inform her that Conan is alive and on the island, and to gloat that she is taking him away from Captain Dyce. Meanwhile, Conan manages to escape from his cell. As guards chase him through the city, Conan climbs up to the window outside Lana's cell, positioned halfway up Industria's giant Triangle Tower.
6 Dyce's Rebellion 1977.05.16
After getting the drop on the guard, Conan and Lana escape from the cell. When Monsley discovers the break-in, she alerts her superior, and Chief Lepka activates the tower's observation ports. Caught up in the transformation around them, Conan and Lana jump down, making a break for X Tower. While evading blocked passages and guards, they find a hangar containing a giant pre-apocalypse warplane. In a moment of realization, Lana understands that their pursuit of her grandfather's solar power technology is linked to this weapon. They are soon recaptured and subjected to interrogation, but Lana refuses to betray her grandfather. Meanwhile, Captain Dyce intends to break away from Industrial and sees the perfect opportunity in taking Lana from them, knowing they won't attack the ship if she's aboard. Although his disguise is flimsy, it enables him to reach Lana, but Lepka spots him on the way out. Thankfully, Dyce's plan includes his mechanized walker.
7 Chase 1977.05.23
Although Jimsy and Lana are aboard the departing Barracuda, Conan is still locked up in a cell, and Lana doesn't want to leave him behind, even attempting to jump overboard. With Industria forces in pursuit, Captain Dyce leads them into a ship graveyard he knows well. The wreckage halts the pursuers, but the chief receives authorization to continue the chase with the Falco and Gunboat, led by himself and Monsley. After Conan plays dead to escape his cell, he stows away on the Falco just before it takes off. As Monsley closes in on the Barracuda with the Falco, Conan springs into action and sabotages the plane, causing it to crash and nearly sink. Monsley decides to get rid of Conan for good by using the remote magnet on his still-intact shackles to bind his hands and feet together. Incredibly, Conan is still nearly able to reach the Barracuda but can't quite make it aboard due to its speed.
8 Escape 1977.05.30
As the Gunboat drives the Barracuda back into Conan's path, he seizes the opportunity and latches onto the hull. With everyone distracted, Lana steals a small motorboat and rescues Conan. The Barracuda is finally overrun and boarded by Industria soldiers. Not realizing Lana is on board the small boat, the Gunboat decides to sink it instead of giving chase into the reefs. As their boat goes down in flames, Conan is stuck to a piece of sinking metal due to his shackles. Despite Lana's best efforts to help him, she eventually blacks out just before he breaks free. Finding themselves among the remnants of an old battlefield, the pair takes shelter to avoid the Falco patrolling overhead.
9 The Salvage Ship 1977.06.06
Finally passing out from exhaustion, a man named Patch from the nearby Salvage Ship finds them and brings them back. Once they recover, Patch intends to put them to work. One crew member, Terit, objects and insists on following the law that mandates all healthy stateless people must be turned over to Industria. When Conan boasts about his diving ability, a wrench is thrown into the water to challenge him to retrieve it. Three minutes pass, and everyone assumes he has drowned, but he returns with the wrench and a suitcase from the lower level. As it turns out, the Salvage Ship's objective is to raise the ship below to the surface. Conan and Patch work to repair the holes in the sunken vessel while Terit presses Lana to reveal their identities. When he uses the crane to restrain Conan as he comes up for air, Lana has no choice but to confess. However, their conversation is abruptly interrupted by the sudden arrival of Monsley and the Falco.
10 Dr. Lao 1977.06.13
After successfully sneaking aboard the Falco, Terit tells Lepka everything he knows. He is then given a mission to return undercover and notify them when Lana makes contact with her grandfather. The next day, nature itself seems uneasy as moths blanket the landscape around the Salvage Ship. While Patch inspects sunken vessel, Lana realizes there are no clouds, birds, or even waves. Suddenly, an earthquake strikes, trapping Patch below. Though Terit is quick to assume he is dead, Lana hears his voice in her head, prompting Conan to dive back in to rescue him. As Patch surfaces, Lana finally realizes that he is her grandfather.
11 Escaping 1977.06.20
The Falco lands at Salvage Ship, and Terit informs Monsley that they fled during the storm. Meanwhile, Patch reaches an old runaground ship, where he had hidden his flying machine after escaping from Industria. Unfortunately, he will need parts that only Industria can provide if they hope to repair it. Despite the danger, Conan and Lana are eager to return so they can rescue Jimsy. As the struggling aircraft limps along, they find Captain Dyce tied to his execution post under the scorching desert sun. After freeing him and providing water, he expresses his desire to go to Industria as well to save his men and reclaim the Barracuda. However, their reunion is interrupted by the familiar Falco seaplane, and after a brief scuffle, Conan tricks them into shooting out their own wings. As Monsley and the others are subdued, another earthquake strikes, and Patch voices his belief that Industria will soon sink into the ocean.

Finally reaching Industria, they split up, with Lana and Patch heading to Triangle Tower while Conan and Dyce execute a prison break. However, Monsley manages to repair her radio just in time to alert Lepka of their plans. As advancing troops drive Conan and Dyce back, monitors reveal Patch moving through the caverns beneath the city, with security doors being closed behind him remotely.
12 Core Block 1977.06.27
Patch presses forward and descends into a massive hole leading down to the Core Block. Conan successfully frees the prisoners from their cells and finally reunites with Jimsy, while Dyce departs in the Barracuda. Meanwhile, the central committee scientists attempt to dismiss Lepka as chief of administration, as he is violating their laws by using the military within Industria. One of the prisoners rescued by Conan helps him navigate through the tunnels beneath the city. As they locate Patch, they find themselves cornered by the pursuing soldiers. Patch hands Lana the part needed for his flying machine and runs off to distract them. As Lana and Conan work quickly to repair the flying machine, they manage to get it operational just in time to rescue Patch as he is being hoisted to the surface. Soaring above the clouds away from Industria, they spot the Barracuda, and Dyce sets a course for High Harbor.
13 High Harbor 1977.07.04
While Patch, also known as Dr. Lao, leaves the children with Dyce, he intends to return to Industria to see if he can help save them from the impending doom of another earthquake. As the Barracuda nears High Harbor, Lana is suddenly reunited with her bird, Tikki. A nearby ship recognizes the Barracuda as the vessel that took Lana from them and damages it with their bombs, but Lana spots Uncle Gull aboard it, and the attack is called off. After Gull tows them to shore, Conan, Jimsy, and Lana set out for her house in Moto Village. Upon finally returning home, they are greeted by her aunt Meizal. To celebrate Lana's safe return, the village throws a welcome home feast for them.
14 A Day on the Island 1977.07.11
Conan and Jimsy experience civilized living for the first time in their lives. Lana wants to take them to Windmill Village, where she used to work. The girls at the textile mill are happy to see her again while Tarcos shows the two boys around the district. Since this is where the wind blows the strongest on the island, Windmill Village can power its entire industry, including the flour mill, textile mill, and wood mill. Since Conan and Jimsy don't have jobs yet, they decide to earn their keep by foraging for food. When Jimsy is chased by a boar, he tricks it into running over the edge of a cliff, resulting in its death. As Jimsy cooks up his prize, Orlo shows up in the village, complaining about the theft of his pig. After the mayor agrees to his demands if the culprit happens to be from the village, Conan and Jimsy return with the cooked meat. Although they now owe Orlo 50 bags of wheat, Uncle Gull says he can settle the matter since he has something he wants. That night, Conan and Jimsy sneak out to smooth things over with Orlo themselves.
15 Barren Land 1977.07.18
As they cross the mountains through a narrow pass, Conan and Jimsy are chased by masked "ghosts" on horseback and fall into a trap. Taken before Orlo by his sister Tera, he refuses to believe that someone like Jimsy could take down his invincible pig. As a test to see if they are telling the truth, Orlo challenges them to capture an equally wild pig of his using only rope. He even offers to forget about the other one if they can manage to pull this off. As Conan and Jimsy lead the pig around the field, the spectators mistakenly believe they are running scared, but they successfully tie it up as it chases them around a boulder. Impressed, Orlo offers them leadership positions in his country, promising they can eat all the meat they want.

That's all it takes to hook Jimsy, and he learns to ride a horse with Tera. However, after a confrontation with the shepherd Tito, Jimsy sees how leaders abuse the people of this country and decides to quit, with Tera riding away in anger. Tito reveals that they all live in a village created by orphans who ended up on the island, and Orlo was once one of them. When Orlo catches up to them on horseback, Lana offers her mother's memento if he will go away. As they walk back, Conan and Jimsy decide to build their own house so they can properly be part of the village.
16 The Hut for Two 1977.08.01
Lana has a nightmare about her village burning in an attack by Industria troops and is convinced her grandfather is trying to warn her. The next day, while visiting Tito's village, Dyce shows up at Orlo's. He schmoozes Orlo by giving him a working wristwatch as a present, hoping to recruit him to help raise the Barracuda. The leaders have forbidden it, but Dyce has the resources to capture the village if he wants. As a test, Orlo says he wants Dyce to teach Conan a lesson before he considers joining him. Conan shows Lana the tree fort he built with Jimsy near Tito's village. He says he plans to return to Remnant Island someday and asks her to go with him, to which she agrees. With his walker mech raised from the Barracuda, Dyce prepares to attack the tree fort but breaks off when he notices the Gunboat on the horizon.
17 Battle 1977.08.08
While Conan and Jimsy go to scout, Lana goes back to warn the villagers. Industria troops land near Orlo's territory, with the Gunboat driving back his cavalry charge. Conan and Jimsy spot Tera being thrown and run down to rescue her. The mayor adresses the village, and the people decide to fight for the island instead of letting Industria take it over. The next morning, Monsley and her troops occupy Orlo's camp, and Orlo offers to join her side. After putting on a show by being chased by Industria troops, Orlo is reunited with Tera back at the village. Meanwhile, Conan and Uncle Gull attempt to bomb the Gunboat, but it blasts them out of the water and begins shelling the village. Orlo decides to make his move and demand the surrender of the village, saying the Gunboat won't stop until he gives the signal. With the white flag waved above the church tower, Monsley arrives at the pass to discuss their surrender. While out searching for Lana, Conan sees Industria troops approaching her after she was knocked out by the blasts.
18 Gun Boat 1977.08.15
As Conan escapes with Lana, he is struck by a blast from the pursuing troops. Lana saves him by concealing him in a crater but is captured when she runs off to distract the guards. Uncle Gull finds Conan and suggests they hide at the fish preserve cove, but Conan runs back to Moto Village. At the village, Monsley addresses the crowd, stating that they will be expected to make agricultural donations to Industria. With that, she appoints Orlo as the new leader of the island. Suddenly, Conan throws a spear at Orlo, vowing to save everyone from Industria, and jumps into the water while soldiers shoot at him. Back with Uncle Gull, they devise a plan to sink the gunboat with gunpowder to prevent them from stealing Lana or transporting goods back to Industria. While attaching the bomb to the propeller shaft, Conan overhears that Lana is already on the ship. After making his way aboard, Conan is unable to overcome the crew and is thrown into a cell next to Lana. With no choice, he tells the captain about the bomb, who sends some crew members below to retrieve it. Observing the bomb on deck, it appears the fuse may have gone out right at the gunpowder. Suddenly, it explodes, and the ship begins to sink. With Lana still in her cell, the room starts to fill with water, but Conan appears and breaks open the door to rescue her.
19 A Big Tidal Wave 1977.08.29
After Monsley organizes the villagers to serve as labor to repair the Barracuda, she assigns Orlo the task of capturing Conan. While relaxing in a garden, she spots a dog and is suddenly reminded of her childhood. Chasing her dog Miku, bombers overhead bring an end to the world. Ocean tidal waves set her adrift, and she is eventually rescued by a ship that takes her to their new refuge at Industria. While Uncle Gull prepares more bombs to stop the Barracuda operation, Lana notices the unusual weather, reminiscent of what she experienced back at Salvage Ship. She runs off to warn the villagers on the beach about the impending earthquake but is caught by Orlo. She telepathically tells Conan to look out to the sea, and upon seeing the tidal wave in the distance, he alerts everyone while being shot at. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, they all take cover in the Barracuda. As the wave recedes, the villagers seize the moment and disarm the Industria soldiers, and Monsley realizes they have just lost.
20 Going to Industria Again 1977.09.12
The mayor addresses the captured soldiers, stating that they will be welcomed into High Harbor if they choose to stay. The time to harvest wheat is approaching, and the island could use their help. Monsley remains the only one being stubborn, even after the girls give her a makeover. Conan becomes determined to return to Industria and wants Jimsy to come with him. With the Barracuda in its damaged state, reaching their destination seems impossible until he remembers the old seaplane in the fish preserve. With Monsley's assistance, she confirms that it still works. Lana and the others are sad to see Conan go, but Uncle Gull is more accepting, recognizing that events in Industria also impact High Harbor. As Conan, Jimsy, and Monsley depart, Lana joins them at the last moment, and even Dyce hops on as a stowaway. Approaching Industria, they encounter the repaired Falco, which suddenly attacks them. Lana, Jimsy, and Dyce are quickly dropped off while Conan and Monsley take off once again to provide a diversion.
21 Residents Under the Ground 1977.09.19
Their plane crashes into Industria's slums, and they are captured soon after. Evading the patrolling Falco, Lana, Jimsy, and Dyce fall into a hole created by the earthquake and end up in the tunnels leading to the underground city. Chief Lepka issues a city-wide alert for their capture, but they escape deeper into the tunnels in a mine cart, away from the pursuing guards. They realize the entire area is flooding with seawater due to cracks from the earthquake, yet they sense that Lana's grandfather is still somewhere nearby.

As it turns out, Dr. Lao willingly met with Industria's scientists, offering his solar power technology in exchange for the evacuation of the doomed city. In response, Lepka detained them all and declared himself dictator. Witnessing Lepka's brutal torture of Dr. Lao and his plan to intentionally flood the underground city, Monsley urges him to consider the offer to live peacefully in High Harbor. Lepka, in turn, orders her execution for insubordination, and Monsley finally turns against Industria, helping to free Conan from his cell.
22 Rescue 1977.09.25
Knowing Lepka's plan is to flood the rebels in the underground city to drive Lana out, Conan goes below to disarm the bomb, but there are just too many of them. With the main gates shuttered until Lepka's demands are met, Lana surrenders herself to save everyone. However, Lepka goes back on his word, stating that no one will be spared until Dr. Lao relinquishes the solar energy technology. Meanwhile, Conan joins Luke and learns that the control for the armored shutter is located in Triangle Tower. Using an inverted mining cart to trap an air pocket, Conan, Jimsy, and Dyce slip through an exposed crack in the tunnel. When Lana is brought before her grandfather, she discovers that Lepka's torture has made him deaf and blind. Through their telepathic connection, she tells him about the events in High Harbor. Realizing that his torture of Lao is pointless, Lepka sets Lana out on an extended platform hanging perilously from the side of Triangle Tower in a bid to force him to cooperate. Conan and the others rescue Monsley, who is about to be executed, and head straight for the control room. Liberating the scientists there, they open the armored shutters just in time.
23 The Solar Tower 1977.10.03
Rebels from the underground city reach the surface through the now-opened armored shutters. Just as Conan is about to rescue Lana, Lepka retracts the platform and pulls her inside. Conan fights through the tower's guards and defenses to find Lepka on the roof with his flying machine. Since Lana is the only link to communicate with Dr. Lao now, Lepka intends to take her with him. Conan attacks the flying machine as it takes off and hops aboard to save Lana before it crashes below. With the rebels in control of Industria, Lana is able to convey Dr. Lao's instructions to the scientists so they can harness solar power. The tower's mirror rooftops align to communicate with the solar panel satellite in Earth's orbit. A beam of light illuminates the tower, and all electrical equipment springs to life. For the first time since the Great Disaster, facilities like escalators and food vendors are up and running. As everyone enjoys the spectacle, Conan and Jimsy meet up with Lana and Dr. Lao, accompanying them to the tower's holographic park. Dr. Lao explains that the self-indulgent pursuit of technology was the cause of the Great Disaster and that mankind will once again need to learn to live in harmony with nature.
24 Giganto 1977.10.17
As another earthquake strikes, Lepka and his men hurriedly prepare the Giganto, a massive pre-war bomber. Lepka storms into the tower's control room and diverts all energy to charge the warplane. Lana and Monsley alert Conan and the others aboard the Salvage Ship of Lepka's plan, and they all return to Industria on the Falco. They arrive just in time to see the Giganto take to the skies. The Falco launches a futile attack and is shot down on Giganto's wing. Lana and Monsley limp back to Industria aboard the damaged Falco, while Conan, Jimsy, and Dyce set out to disable the Giganto from within.
25 The End of Industria 1977.10.24
As Conan searches for a way in, Lepka's men attempt to shoot him off the wing. Jimsy and Dyce take control of one of the turrets to assist him and accidentally blow a hole in the wall, providing them access to Giganto's interior. They reach the engine room and wreak havoc. With the main engine out of commission, only six sub-engines are keeping Giganto airborne. Dyce and Jimsy reach another turret at the top of the fin and inflict critical damage on the plane. In a desperate move, Lepka detaches the entire fin while they are still inside. Realizing the situation is hopeless, Lepka runs for the escape pod at the nose of the plane but encounters Conan. Unable to save Lepka and his crew, Giganto crashes into the ocean among the ruins of the old world.

Back at Industria, the survivors make last-minute preparations as they get ready to depart. Another earthquake strikes, accompanied by a strange light phenomenon. Dr. Lao warns them that the crust's last support has broken, and they need to leave immediately. The scientists say goodbye to Lao, choosing to stay behind in Industria and vanish with the old world.
26 Denouement 1977.10.31

Stranded in the ocean, Jimsy and Dyce are fishing on the floating fin when they are rescued by the passenger ship. While Dyce regales them with his tale about defeating the Giganto, Lana confides in her grandfather that she still can't hear Conan's voice. Following his advice, she clears her mind and spiritually follows Tikki to find Conan still adrift at sea. With their friend located, Dyce turns the ship around to rescue him. Back aboard, Dr. Lao asks Conan to take care of Lana and build a new world together, passing away soon after.

Back at High Harbor one morning, everyone is gathering for a wedding. As the Barricuda prepares for its grand return to sea, Captain Dyce stands on the deck waiting for his bride, Monsley. Later, Conan and the others depart on the Barricuda to settle Remnant Island. They soon spot land but discover it's much too large to be the little island they are searching for. When Conan spots his grandfather's familiar home on the top of the mountain, they realize the sunken continents are finally returning to the surface.
